Audience segments: define exactly who gets each send

Modified on Sat, 11 Jul at 10:29 AM

Audience Segments let you save reusable slices of your clients or leads - "past clients in Chicago", "high-quality leads from this year" - and then target newsletters and broadcasts at exactly those people. Rules are dynamic, so a segment's membership stays current as your data changes, and you always see a live count of who's in it.

Where to find it

Open the Clients area from the left sidebar, click Newsletters, then switch to the Segments tab. You can start from scratch with New Segment, or use one of the starter templates shown at the top of the page to get going faster.

The Audience Segments page with the New Segment button and starter template chips, before any segments have been created

Build a segment

  1. Click New Segment.
  2. Give it a name and an optional description so future-you remembers what it's for.
  3. Pick the source: Clients or Leads. This decides which records the rules run against.
  4. Choose how rules combine: match all (a record must satisfy every rule) or match any (satisfying one rule is enough).
  5. Add rule rows. Each rule is a field, an operator, and a value - stack as many as you need to narrow the audience.
  6. Watch the live recipient preview count as you edit. It updates to show how many people currently match, so you know before saving whether you built "37 past clients" or "3".
  7. Save the segment.

Reading your segment cards

Each saved segment appears as a card showing how many rules it has and a live count of current members. Because segments are rule-based rather than fixed lists, the count keeps itself up to date: add a new client that matches the rules and they join the segment automatically.

Using segments in sends

Segments are consumed by the rest of your marketing tools:

  • Newsletters: pick a segment as the audience when you schedule or send a newsletter.
  • Broadcasts: choose a segment in the broadcast audience picker for one-off blasts.

Build the segment once, reuse it everywhere.

Editing and deleting

Open a segment to adjust its rules in the same builder dialog - the live count updates as you change things. If a segment has outlived its purpose, delete it from its card. Deleting a segment removes the saved definition only; it never touches the underlying clients or leads.
